Teen Orthodontic FAQs

What Is The Typical Treatment Time?

Because every case is different, there is no one-size-fits-all answer to this question. However, the average length of orthodontic treatment is anywhere from 6 to 36 months, depending on the severity of the issues being addressed.

After treatment is complete, your teen will be given retainers to maintain your results. We’ll work together as a team with parents and teens to create a smile that will last a lifetime.

Can My Teen Play Sports While Wearing Braces?

Yes!! Dr Miller’s own son is a goalie who plays rep hockey and is currently in braces. Sports are such a huge part of so many of our teens’ lives and there’s no way we would interrupt that.  If your teen athlete is getting ready to start braces treatment, it’s important to protect their teeth and orthodontic appliances to keep their treatment progressing.

We encourage all of our patients that play sports to invest in an orthodontic mouthguard to keep their smile safe. Your teen can continue playing any type of sport, as long as they take the proper precautions and use an orthodontic mouthguard.

If your teen is using Invisalign, they can simply take out their aligner during game time and replace it when they’re finished, or even continue to wear their aligners if they wish, although the aligners do not take the place of a well fitted mouthguard.

Can My Teen Keep Playing Their Instrument?

In almost all cases, absolutely! However, traditional metal braces may take some getting used to as they can affect the way your teen plays certain instruments that require using their mouth.

Invisalign is a great option for musicians because it can be removed when playing an instrument, giving them no limitations whatsoever.
